You’re committed to earning a PMP certification. All you need now is support from your employer to pay for your training.
Oh, is that all? For many of us, asking for the boss’ approval is no small hurdle. Here’s a step-by-step way to ask for a training budget.
A good way to get the conversation started (especially if you’re a little nervous about the process) is to send an email. The idea is to give the boss a complete and persuasive proposal for why the company should support you in this endeavor. Here’s a template for asking for that support.
Clearly state your goal
Example:
You know I’ve been working to improve my project management skills. Our work on the GoshItsCool project is important to the company, and I want to do my best to ensure that it’s a success.
I’m writing you with the hope that you will support my goal of advancing my project management knowledge and practical skills by earning the prestigious Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Provide background on the certification
Example:
With a worldwide network of over 700,000 PMP credential holders, PMP certification is recognized as the most important and sought-after certification in project management. It validates a candidate’s competence to perform the role of project manager, leading and directing projects and teams.
Explain the benefits to your company and to the boss
Example:
As I see it, there are several reasons that OurCompany will benefit from me acquiring a PMP certification:
Transferable knowledge and skills: The PMP training provides me with the tools and framework to manage any of our projects, and make me a more productive and valued contributor. (Though I like to think I’m already valuable…!)
In-House resource: As a PMP-certified project manager, I can be an in-house resource and mentor for project management best practices and processes.
Respect and appreciation: With PMPs on staff, our organization proves to internal and external clients that we are committed to excellence and that we have the skills and knowledge to back up that claim. (Or more colloquially: Lots of clients are impressed by PMP certifications.)
Performance and financial impact: Ultimately, it’s about what I learn that can make our projects succeed. Improvements in daily decision-making, processes, and overall project management can improve company success and save money.
Give details on the training program
Example:
The first step for me to earn the PMP credential is to prepare for the exam. I’ve researched a number of options and I found a course that is thorough, flexible enough to fit into my schedule, and extremely relevant to my position. It also has the benefit of being affordable for the OurCompany budget! Here is a link to more information on the training program I’m interested in: Name of course/link to website.
Ask for a meeting
Example:
I hope you are willing to consider this training and development opportunity. I’d love to meet in person and go over any questions you have and provide more details on the certification and training program. Please let me know when you are available to discuss it further.
